This first line of Work is awakened in us when we become aware that time is passing. If we do not look we will not see. If we do not ask we will not receive. We have the obligation to make what the world can offer our own. This cannot come unless we do something about it. There is a hunger really to know for oneself which some people have and others lack. There is no substitute for this hunger, but it does manifest in various ways and in different degrees. All those who wish to take the Work seriously must become aware of the obligation to make what is outside them real for themselves.

THROUGH THE FIRST LINE of work we can find out about ourselves. We can verify for ourselves the mechanicality of our lives. We can come to see that we do have a higher and lower nature. We can discover various ways in which we deceive ourselves. We can know our weaknesses. All of this leads to nothing unless we do something about it. If we rest content with knowledge about these things we will not change. Struggling with our weaknesses is the essence of work on ourselves. It is this struggle that provides the energy that will feed our being.

THE ESSENTIAL FEATURE of the 3rd line of Work is that we give up part of our life to something outside of us for which we have undertaken responsibility. The clearest example is being a parent. We have to work now in order that something is made possible for people in the future who will know nothing of us and may never give the work of earlier generations a single thought.

In the 4th line of Work, manifestation, we essentially have nothing to do with what manifests, either actively or receptively. The Work manifests itself. We can recognize this if we have learned to be able to see that we have neither done anything nor have we consented to something being done in us. The Work needs to manifest the hidden; the spiritual world requires a vehicle and instrument through which it can work in this world. In so far as we can get out of the way, we can be used. We must cease to be there as something separate.

The 5th line of Work requires an open receptivity without sacrificing discrimination. In particular in requires an understanding that help is available because of the larger context of a task to be done or a community of interests that we can 'join'. Transformation without receiving help is a near impossibility. And yet we often restrict the help available through imposing quite arbitrary and unnecessary limitations on how that help can reach us, hence the need for this line of Work.

THIS LINE OF WORK is from the within to the within. Whereas the 5th line of Work has to do with receptivity to what comes from outside of us, including our participation in community, the 6th line of Work has to do with giving our consent to what comes from within. It requires our 'submission' to our own conscience, to our own higher nature, to the master within. This submission is what's required to change our very being.

Words such as grace, purity and unmerited point toward a line of Work that is almost beyond our comprehension, but a line which is probably closer to us than any of the other lines. The 7th line of work, Acceptance, directs our attention to a source of help beyond our ordinary consciousness. But this doesn't mean that we play no part in its manifestation. Leaning how to create the conditions for its action is essential for our development.
